Setting Failures in X-Plane 11

X-Plane 11 has the ability to simulate countless aircraft systems failures. This feature lets you experience what happens when important pieces of equipment don't perform as expected. Watch the video or scroll down for more information.

Getting Started

You can access the failure screen in a couple ways. If you've already started a flight go to the flight menu and click Edit Failures.

Another way to access this is by going into the Flight Configuration menu and clicking Customize on the aircraft you want to use. Then click the Failures button at the bottom of the window.

In the Failures menu, there are categories for all the failure options, and at the bottom of the window is the convenient Fix All Systems button to fix any failures that have been accidentally turned on.

Setting Global Mean Times

The box to the right of this button, "Set global mean time between failures," is checked by default. This means that randomized failures WILL occur as you fly, unless you uncheck the box.

The hours field to the right of that determines how frequently these random failures might occur. Again, if you don't want that kind of randomized excitement in your sim experience, make sure this box is unchecked to prevent random failures.

Selecting Failures

To set the specific failures of your choice, you can search for a term in the search bar or expand some categories to see the specific options within them. Once you find the failure you want, click on the drop-down box to show the options to select when it fails.

The drop-down menu contains some other handy options, such as binding a command to a joystick button or to the keyboard. You can also set a failure to happen at an exact altitude speed or time, or you can set a mean failure time for that particular failure.

With so many possibilities to set up different flight emergencies and unexpected problems, you can hone your problem solving skills or make your flight a lot more challenging.
