Tracing Vulkan Device Loss Crashes

These instructions are intended for Windows users running X-Plane 11.51b2 or newer, with a Nvidia GPU + latest drivers, that are experiencing Vulkan "device loss" crashes.

If you do not have X-Plane 11.51 (currently in beta testing), please follow these instructions first to opt into the beta

For users who purchased X-Plane via digital key or DVD:

  1. Download the Aftermath.bat file.
  2. Move the Aftermath.bat file into your X-Plane 11.51 installation directory.
  3. Double click the Aftermath.bat file, which will launch X-Plane with Aftermath enabled.
  4. Note that using Aftermath will cause a FPS hit.
  5. Fly normally and wait for a device loss crash.
  6. When one occurs, the auto crash report form should open.
  7. Fill in your email address, then hit the Send button.
  8. Diagnostic information will automatically be sent to the X-Plane Development team.
  9. There are no steps necessary to revert and back out of using Aftermath, since it's only enabled when running from the bat file.

For users who purchased X-Plane via Steam:

  1. Right click on X-Plane 11 in your library.
  2. Select "Properties..."
  3. Go to the "General" tab in the new window.
  4. Click on "Set launch options..."
  5. Insert "--aftermath"
  6. Confirm with "Ok".
  7. Every time X-Plane launches afterwards, it'll have Aftermath enabled.
  8. Note that using Aftermath will cause a FPS hit.
  9. Fly normally and wait for a device loss crash
  10. When one occurs, the auto crash report form should open.
  11. Fill in your email address, then hit the Send button.
  12. Diagnostic information will automatically be sent to the X-Plane Development team.
  13. To opt out of Aftermath again, repeat the previous steps but remove the "--aftermath" launch option
